Government assists residents stranded in Europe by air traffic disruptions
*******************************************************

The volcanic eruption in Iceland has seriously affected air traffic in Europe. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is concerned about Hong Kong residents being stranded there, and is actively offering practical assistance.

As at today (April 21), the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit (AHU) of the Immigration Department (ImmD) has received 234 enquiries, mainly on flight information.  There have also been 11 requests for assistance.  ImmD has been in close contact with relevant government bureaux/departments, as well as the Chinese embassies/consulates to provide assistance.

A government spokesman said, "ImmD is in close liaison with the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in Hong Kong and the Chinese embassies/consulates to provide assistance to Hong Kong residents.  Such assistance may include provision of relevant information, contact with family in Hong Kong, provision of advance funds for urgent needs and other support."

Residents outside Hong Kong who require assistance may call the 24-hour hotline of the AHU of the ImmD on (852)1868.
