April 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (April 20) the April 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Analysis of Hong Kong's Imports of Goods", "The Financial Services Sector in Hong Kong" and "Public Transport Patronage of Hong Kong, 1999 to 2009" are included.

"Analysis of Hong Kong's Imports of Goods"

     Hong Kong is an externally oriented economy.  In 2009, the value of Hong Kong's total exports of goods amounted to $2,469.1 billion, while that of imports of goods was $2,692.4 billion.  The ratio of the value of total exports of goods to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 1.51, while that of the value of imports of goods to GDP was 1.65.

     Goods consumed locally in Hong Kong are mostly imported.  Meanwhile, a large proportion of Hong Kong's imports of goods, apart from being consumed locally, is for subsequent re-exportation.  This feature article analyses performance of Hong Kong's imports of goods in recent years.

"The Financial Services Sector in Hong Kong"

     Hong Kong has developed into one of the most vibrant international financial centres in the world.  The contribution of the financial services sector to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product reached some 16% in 2008, almost doubled the figure in 1998.  Although the financial services sector experienced severe setback in 2008 due to financial tsunami, the business of this sector saw a strong revival in 2009 in the wake of the gradual fade-away of the impact of financial tsunami.  This feature article presents the operating characteristics and business performance of selected industries in the sector between 2006 and 2008.  It also briefly highlights the overall quarterly business performance of selected industries in the sector in 2009.

"Public Transport Patronage of Hong Kong, 1999 to 2009"

     Hong Kong has an efficient and reliable public transport system to facilitate the movement of passengers within the territory.  The system on average carried over 11 million passengers daily in 2009 and plays a dominant role in Hong Kong's passenger transport system.

     This feature article presents the trend of public transport patronage of Hong Kong from 1999 to 2009.  Changes in the shares of passenger journeys in different modes of public transport are also discussed.

     Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
