Cluster of Rotavirus cases in a Queen Elizabeth Hospital neonatal ward

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (April 19):

     Since April 12, eight newborn infants (five male and three female, aged nine days to 27 days) in a neonatal ward have presented with diarrhoea symptoms. Appropriate tests were arranged for the infants. The results for all infants were positive for Rotavirus. Of the eight infants, one male infant has been discharged, the rest are being treated under isolation and in stable condition.

     Admission to the cubicle concerned has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed. Infection control measures of the ward concerned have been stepped up. All other infants in the ward are under close medical surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
