Qinghai quake volunteer Wong Fuk-wing's body returns to HK (with photos/video)

     The body of a Hong Kong volunteer, Mr Wong Fuk-wing, who lost his life in Qinghai, tonight (April 18) arrived in Shenzhen Bay control point via Guangzhou after a farewell memorial ceremony in Xining.

     Receiving the hearse at a solemn ceremony at Shenzhen Bay control point were the Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan-lung, SC, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, Director of Chief Executive Office, Mr Raymond Tam and Under Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok.

     Representing the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, was the Aide-de-Camp, Mr Steve Hui.

     Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central Government in the HKSAR, Mr Zhou Junming, Director-General of the Social Work Department of the Liaison Office, Mr Zhang Tiefu, and Deputy Director-General of Kowloon Sub-office of the Liaison Office, Mr Rong Fuhua, also attended the ceremony, together with Mr Wong's relatives in Hong Kong.

     All present paid their tribute to the late Mr Wong who had nobly sacrificed himself.

     Led by the Police Guard of Honour and escorted by traffic police, the hearse with the coffin covered by a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region flag left Shenzhen Bay control point.

     The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, commends Mr Wong for his volunteer work. He is also highly appreciative of his selfless and courageous act. Writing a piece entitled "A Role Model for HK People" in his blog, Mr Tsang praised Mr Wong for going back to the scene to save other lives while ignoring his own safety. Mr Wong was killed when the building collapsed.

     Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, has also written an article "In memory of Mr Wong Fuk-wing" which has been uploaded to the bureau's website. Mr Tsang says not only has Mr Wong brought out the best of his life, he has also shown the best of the volunteering spirit.

     The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will provide all possible assistance to Mr Wong's family, and according to their wish, help in Wong's funeral arrangements.
