The Home Affairs Bureau today (April 16) announced the appointment of Mr Charles Chow Chan-lum as Chairman of the Cantonese Opera Advisory Committee (COAC). The appointment of nine new members and re-appointment of 16 serving members were also announced.

The committee is appointed for a two-year term, effective from May 1, 2010, to April 30, 2012.

A spokesman for the Home Affairs Bureau said Cantonese opera had become the first item of world intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong. The Government will allocate more resources to further support the preservation, promotion and development of Cantonese opera.

The spokesman thanked the outgoing chairman, Dr Stephen Chow Chun-kay, and six outgoing members (Mr Leung Hon-wai, Mr Ip Sai-hung, Mr Wen Choy-bon, Ms Shi Fung-ling, Ms Wan Fai-yin and Prof Andrew Chan Chi-fai) for their valuable contributions to the work of the COAC. In particular, Dr Chow has served as the chairman of the committee for six years since its inception and provided strenuous support for the development of Cantonese opera.  Under his able leadership, the committee has rendered the Government valuable advice on the development of Cantonese opera.  The Home Affairs Bureau is grateful to Dr Chow for his important contributions to the development of Cantonese opera and the work of the committee.
