********************************************

Hip Fat Dec. Eng. Co. and Chung Shan Scaffolding Limited were each fined $20,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (April 15) for violation of Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on August 4 last year on a renovation site at Kwun Tong.  A worker fell to his death when dismantling a truss-out bamboo scaffold erected on the external wall of a building.

According to Regulations 38B(1) and 38B(1A) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor shall take adequate steps to prevent a person on the site from falling from a height of two metres or more.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000.
