Interested parties are urged to submit their applications for the Bun Scrambling Competition on Cheung Chau by Friday (April 16). In this year's competition, results of male and female finalists will be ranked and awarded separately for the first time.
Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the 2010 Bun Carnival will be held at the Pak Tai Temple Playground soccer pitch in Cheung Chau from May 8 to 22. The carnival is presented in association with the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, the Cheung Chau Rural Committee, the Islands District Office and the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and is sponsored by Luk Fook Jewellery, Watsons Water and Islands District Council.
As the carnival finale, the Bun Scrambling Competition will be held at 11.30pm on May 21 until 12.30am on May 22. In the competition, three female participants with the best results in the selection will contend with the nine shortlisted male participants for the championship of their respective groups.
The Hong Kong Mountaineering Union will provide training sessions on bun tower climbing and prevention of falling on May 8, 9 and on the morning of May 15. Applicants must attend one of the training sessions before participating in the selection of finalists on the afternoon of May 15. A total of 12 finalists (three female and nine male) will be shortlisted. They are required to scramble for the buns, which carry different scores, on the bun tower within a time limit in the final competition. The one with the highest total score is the winner. Results of the men's team and the women's team will be ranked separately.
Physically fit people aged 18 or above are welcome to join the Bun Scrambling Competition. If more than 150 applications are received, places will be allocated by ballot. Applicants who live, work or study on Cheung Chau will have priority in the ballot.
Prospectuses and enrolment forms for the Bun Scrambling Competition are available for collection from the 18 District Leisure Services Offices, sports centres in the Islands District, and from the co-organiser and assisting organisers. Completed enrolment forms should be returned by hand or by post to the Islands District Leisure Services Office of the LCSD at Room 622, 6/F, Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Central, Hong Kong, on or before April 16. The forms can also be faxed to 2854 3949.
