Princess Margaret Hospital response to the injury of a three-month-old inpatient

     The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) spokesperson made the following announcement today (April 9) regarding the injury of a three-month-old inpatient:

     On April 9, a paediatric nurse who helped a three-month-old baby boy take a bath found that the skin of the baby's hip and legs inflamed and peeled off this morning at around 7:00am.  The nurse immediately informed the ward management and the baby's parents, and dressed the babys wound with medicated lotion.  The baby was jointly assessed by a paediatric intensivist, a surgeon and a stoma nurse.

     The paediatric intensivist and Patient Relations Officer met the baby's parents' at 11:00am today to explain the incident and expressed the hospital's concern to them.  To ensure comprehensive treatment, the baby was transferred under the escort of medical staff to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) for further treatment upon the parents' consent.

     The incident was immediately reported to the hospital management and Hospital Authority Head Office via the Advanced Incident Reporting System (AIRS).  The hospital was very concerned about the incident and has set up a panel to investigate the cause of the incident.  The investigation report will be completed within six weeks.

     The hospital will be in close contact with the PICU of QMH to closely monitor the recovery progress of the baby.  The hospital would also offer all necessary assistance to the baby's family.  The baby is currently in stable condition.
