EPD holds roving exhibition on waste electrical and electronic equipment (with photo)
****************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is holding a series of roving exhibitions starting today (April 9) to enhance the public's understanding of the issue of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Hong Kong. The exhibition will last until April 30.

The Under Secretary for the Environment, Dr Kitty Poon, said, "Hong Kong generates around 70,000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment each year and the volume has been increasing at the rate of 2%annually in recent years.  WEEE contain hazardous components that are harmful to the environment and human health if not properly treated or disposed of, therefore they must be handled with care."

She said the exhibition aimed to enhance the public's understanding of the problems arising from WEEE and encourage them to give their views on how to address such problems. The Government issued a consultation document on January 18 to solicit public views on introducing a mandatory producer responsibility scheme for the proper management of WEEE.

The exhibition covers information about the WEEE problems in Hong Kong and the key features of the proposed producer responsibility scheme for WEEE. The EPD will distribute leaflets on site that outline the WEEE scheme now under consultation. The consultation document can also be downloaded from the EPD's website (www.epd.gov.hk/epd/weee). Views and comments by April 30 by post (EPD's Waste Management Policy Group, Room 4522 of Revenue Tower in 5 Gloucester Road), email (weee@epd.gov.hk) or facsimile (2318 1877), or through the Internet (www.epd.gov.hk/epd/weee) are welcome.
