Tung Chung Community Hall, the second of its kind in the Islands district, has come into operation to provide residents with a multi-purpose venue with comprehensive facilities for cultural and recreational programmes.

The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, Chairman of Islands District Council, Mr Lam Wai-keung, and District Officer (Islands), Mr Byron Lam, officiated at the opening ceremony of Tung Chung Community Hall today (April 9). After the ceremony, various district organisations presented community arts performances, including singing, instrumental music and dance, for the enjoyment of guests and residents at the well-equipped hall.

Mrs Tan said, "Tung Chung is an important new community in the Islands district, and it drives the further development of the district as a whole. With the rapid development of Tung Chung and its growing population, the community's demand for cultural and recreational facilities is increasingly strong."

She said the Government had always attached great importance to community building, and the Islands District Council and Islands District Office had planned for Tung Chung Community Hall to meet the needs of residents. With wide support from residents and district organisations, and full co-operation from relevant government departments, Tung Chung Community Hall has come into operation.

"The inauguration of Tung Chung Community Hall provides more venues and comprehensive facilities for organising community activities and cultural performances in the Islands district, boosting the district's cultural, arts and sports development and enriching the lives of residents," she said.

The two-storey Tung Chung Community Hall, measuring 1,072 square metres, provides a wide range of facilities for versatile uses. These include a multi-purpose hall with a stage and which can be turned into a badminton court, conference rooms, changing rooms and other supporting facilities to serve as venues for residents and organisations to hold various kinds of activities, such as cultural and recreational activities, arts performances, leisure and sports events, and training courses.

Mrs Tan added, "I look forward to continuing our close co-operation with the District Council, district organisations and residents to provide more extensive facilities for the district to establish a better community environment, and to make the Islands district a quality living place and a harmonious community with a strong sense of belonging."

The first community hall in Islands district, Discovery Bay Community Hall, was opened on June 1, 2009. The Tung Chung Community Services Complex, which was converted from the former Police Lantau Operational Base of Traffic New Territories South, came into operation in mid-2009 to provide a wide range of community services and facilities for Tung Chung residents.
