Mobile WEEE Collection Centre service schedule available online (with photo)
*********************************************************

The updated schedule of the mobile collection service of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) operated by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) had been uploaded onto its waste reduction website, an EPD spokesman said today (April 9).

This weekend, the collection vehicle will be parked at Wah Kwai Estate and Lei Tung Estate in Southern District on April 10 and 11 respectively. The updated schedule is now available at the dedicated website: www.wastereduction.gov.hk/en/workplace/mwcc_detail.htm.

In the last six months from October 2009 to March 2010, up to 3,500 electrical appliances, 2,070 items of computer equipment, 3,700 fluorescent lamps, 300 rechargeable batteries and 6,000 accessory items  were collected through the service.

"We hope that the service will accustom the public to turning in their WEEE for recycling and arouse their awareness of the various WEEE recycling programmes," the spokesman said.

In March 2008, the EPD launched a mobile service for collection of WEEE in 18 districts, in rotation one district per week.

Under the programme, a collection vehicle parks at designated sites from 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays to facilitate local residents to recycle their used computer items, electrical appliances, fluorescent lamps and rechargeable batteries.

The items collected are sorted and handled under different recycling programmes.  Educational panels are displayed at the collection sites to disseminate the message on reduction of e-waste and to promote the recycling programmes.  The service also supports ad-hoc WEEE recycling activities organised by housing estates, non-government organisations and District Offices.
