A collection campaign is being launched by the Hong Kong Museum of History to collect memorabilia, such as street photographs, teaching materials, children's reading materials, product wrapping and bank savings boxes, that are related to the life and development of Hong Kong in the 1960s and 1970s.
As the economy of Hong Kong took off in the 1960s and 1970s, local products successfully made their names and entered the international market. With the flourishing of the broadcasting industry, a distinctive local culture emerged, with books and magazines on Hong Kong popular culture making their debut. Taking a close look around the house, people may discover many items, like children's books, savings boxes, or even wrapping paper of merchandise, that are testimony to this historical period.
The Museum of History calls on the public to share these remembrances of Hong Kong's development by donating artefacts or items related to this period. The collected items may be displayed at the museum. Interested parties please call the museum's Urban and Oral History Unit at 2724 9087 or 2724 9035 before June this year.
The collection campaign is organised in conjunction with the "Memories We Share: Hong Kong in the 1960s and 1970s" exhibition which is currently being staged at the Foyer of the Museum of History until June 14. Featuring a rich collection of historical photographs and video footage, the exhibition takes visitors, especially today's youngsters, back to Hong Kong at this pivotal time to trace the many and varied facets of the life of previous generations. Admission to this exhibition is free.
The Museum of History is located at 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. It opens from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays. It is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).
