Cluster of human Metapneumovirus cases in a male severely mentally handicapped ward of Siu Lam Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Siu Lam Hospital (SLH) made the following announcement today (March 31):

     Nine patients (aged from 35 to 62) and one male staff member in a male ward for the severely mentally handicapped of SLH have presented with fever and respiratory symptoms since March 26. Appropriate tests were arranged for the patients. All were positive for human Metapneumovirus. The patients are being treated under isolation and in stable condition, while the staff member is on sick leave.

     Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up. Other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
