Fatal case of human swine influenza at Queen Mary Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) today (March 31) announced a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 60-year-old female patient with end stage renal failure attended the Accident and Emergency Department of QMH on January 24 due to vomiting and abdominal pain. She was admitted for further treatment.  Positive result for HSI was confirmed on February 2 and she was prescribed with antibiotics. The patient's condition deteriorated and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on March 29. She was certified dead yesterday (March 30). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     The case was reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.
