Broadcasting Authority meeting
******************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Broadcasting Authority:

In March 2010, the Broadcasting Authority (BA) accepted the application of New World Hotel Company Limited (New World) to surrender its Other Licensable Television Programme Service Licence with effect from March 1, 2010. The BA noted that the surrender of licence was a commercial decision of New World.

The BA also considered one complaint case about the radio advertisement for "UA Finance" (「亞洲聯合財務」廣告) broadcast on Metro Finance Channel of Metro Broadcast Corporation Limited (Metro) on October 29, 2009 and November 4, 2009; and CR1 Channel of Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Company Limited (CR) on November 2, 2009.  Metro and CR were advised to observe closely the relevant provisions in the Radio Code of Practice on Advertising Standards.  Further details of the case are available in the Appendix.

The BA also noted that in February 2010, the Commissioner for Television and Entertainment Licensing (CTEL) dealt with 89 cases (201 complaints) under his delegated authority, of which five cases (seven complaints) were classified as minor breaches and 52 cases (97 complaints) were unsubstantiated. The remaining 32 cases (97 complaints) were held to be outside the ambit of the Broadcasting Authority Ordinance.  The monthly complaints figures dealt with by the CTEL from February 2009 to February 2010 are shown in Figure 1. A chart showing the respective natures of the unsubstantiated complaints in February 2010 is at Figure 2. Please visit the BA website (www.hkba.hk) for further information on the complaints.
