A kaleidoscope of Hong Kong's performing arts and visual art talents have gathered under one roof today (March 22) for a photo call never attempted in Hong Kong before.
The photo call is the joint efforts of the performing groups, artists and the government to promote Hong Kong's cultural programme to be staged during the six-month period of the Expo 2010 Shanghai.
Representatives from the performing arts groups, including artists and artistic directors, who will take part in Hong Kong's Expo cultural programmes, as well as some of the visual artists whose works will be presented in the art exhibitions, attended the photo call.
The photo call today was specially staged by renowned choreographer Yuri Ng, who will also be involved in the choreography of a number of Hong Kong's productions for the Expo. Complementing Mr Ng's arrangements was veteran lensman and visual artist Almond Chu, whose works will feature in one of Hong Kong's art exhibitions at the Expo. Mr Chu has a wealth of experience behind the camera shooting Hong Kong's creative talents.
During Expo, Hong Kong's performing groups will showcase their talent in 20 programmes with a total of 47 performances. Genres covered include Cantonese opera, Chinese and western music, dance, drama, opera, music theatre and multi-media performances. Groups participating in Hong Kong's Expo cultural programme include: Yat Po Singers, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, The Hong Kong Ballet, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts School of Dance, City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong Dance Company, Edward Lam Dance Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Festival, The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong, Frederic Mao Theatre Project, Musica Viva and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Alumni Association, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Theatre du Pif, Zuni Icosahedron, Hong Kong Fringe Club, Opera Hong Kong, Pop Culture Creations and Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
In addition, two visual art exhibitions – "Legacy and Creations: Ink Art vs Ink Art" and "Legacy and Creations: Art vs Art" – will be staged at the Shanghai Art Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai respectively. The exhibitions will feature contemporary artworks by masters and young talents.
The "Legacy and Creations: Ink Art vs Ink Art" exhibition features the works of over 40 established artists and young talents representing various streams of ink art including: Lui Shou-kwan, Luis Chan, Liu Guo-song, Kan Tai-keung, Wucius Wong, Leung Kui-ting, Raymond Fung Wing-kee, Hung Hoi, Ou Da-wei, Yip Man-yam, Koon Wai-bong, Wong Hau-kwei, Fung Yat-fung, Kwok Ying, Man Fung-yi, Leung Ka-yin, Ng Kwun-lun, Wong Chung-yu, Kam Chi-keung, Lee Chin-fai and Tong Wing-sze. About 20 visual artists representing other media will be featured in the "Legacy and Creations: Art vs Art" exhibition, including Lam Tung-pang, Chow Chun-fai, Stanley Wong, Almond Chu, Wilson Shieh and Pak Sheung-chuen.
"Our Expo cultural programme is the largest in scale and longest in duration that the government has ever co-ordinated outside Hong Kong," said the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung.
"By presenting our best and upcoming artistic talents, our Expo cultural programme seeks to bring out the uniqueness and diversity of Hong Kong's arts and culture. It will be an exciting opportunity to showcase our talents to the millions of Expo visitors from the Mainland and around the world."
Expo 2010 Shanghai will be held from May 1 to October 31. More than 240 countries, cities and international organisations will participate in the event, which is expected to attract 70 million visitors from the Mainland and worldwide.
