****************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (March 22) the March 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Consumer Price Index analysed by Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose", "The Situation of the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong Economy in 2008" and "Statistics on Innovation Activities in Hong Kong, 2004 to 2008" are included.

"Consumer Price Index analysed by Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose"

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the changes over time in the price level of consumer commodities and services generally purchased by households.

Apart from the overall index, further breakdowns of the CPI by commodity/service group are also released to facilitate more in-depth analyses on consumer inflation.  When analysing the CPIs, Hong Kong has all along adopted a classification system which has evolved over time to meet user needs and local situation.

In recent years, some economies have started to adopt the Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose (COICOP) developed by the United Nations in analysing CPI.  In view of this, C&SD additionally compiles the 2004/05-based CPI based on COICOP to facilitate international comparison.

This feature article gives a brief introduction of the COICOP and analyses the 2004/05-based CPIs by COICOP.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Consumer Price Index Section, C&SD (Tel. : 2805 6401).

"The Situation of the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong Economy in 2008"

Financial services, trading and logistics, tourism, and producer and professional services are the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong economy.  They have been the driving force of Hong Kong's economic growth, providing impetus to growth of other sectors and creating employment.

A feature article analysing the economic contribution and employment situation in 2007 in respect of the Four Key Industries was published in the March 2009 issue of the HKMDS.  This feature article is an updated version of the article published in March 2009, with data on the Four Key Industries for 2008 incorporated.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the National Income Section (2)1, C&SD (Tel. : 2116 5188).

"Statistics on Innovation Activities in Hong Kong, 2004 to 2008"

Innovation is a key impetus to economic growth and development towards a knowledge-based economy.  Innovation activities encompass research and development activities, technological product and process innovation activities as well as organisation and marketing innovation activities which are not directly related to technological advancement but help enhance competitiveness and business performance.

Statistics on innovation activities are useful in shedding light on the diffusion of innovation activities in an economy and can offer insight into possible development areas.  This feature article aims at portraying the latest development of innovation activities in Hong Kong, with separate analyses for research and development, technological innovation and non-technological innovation activities.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Science and Technology Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel. : 2887 5138).
