Junior Police Call members and groups commended for their contributions (with photos)

      A total of 40 Junior Police Call (JPC) members and leaders, as well as 57 JPC school clubs and district councils were commended today (March 20) for their outstanding contributions in organising and participating in community services, publicising fight crime messages and promoting the JPC Scheme.

      During the Presentation Ceremony of the Hongkong Bank Foundation JPC Awards 2009, they received commendation trophies and cash awards from the Commissioner of Police, Mr Tang King-shing; Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Tsang Wai-hung; and Head of Corporate Sustainability Asia Pacific Region of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), Ms Teresa Au.

      Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Superintendent of Police Public Relations Branch, Mr Ng Ka-sing, said the JPC scheme had made significant developments over the past 35 years. Numerous young members had benefited from the training and exposure and they were committed to serving and caring for the community through active participation in volunteer services, fight crime and anti-drug activities.  
      
       Mr Ng pointed out that the scheme currently had more than 170 000 members including over 700 Non-Ethnic Chinese. He thanked JPC honorary presidents, school principals, teachers and school clubs for their support and made the scheme a success.

       Ms Teresa Au also commended JPC members for their creativity and confidence. She said: ˇ§HSBC has been a strong supporter of education, in particular projects that help students to have holistic development. HSBC is proud to have funded the Junior Police Call Awards Scheme since 1986. We hope to encourage the youth of Hong Kong to serve the community, develop their potential and nurture their leadership skills.ˇ¨

      Organised by the Police with a funding of over $5 million from the Hongkong Bank Foundation for the past 24 years, the JPC Awards Scheme comprises five categories: Best JPC Member, Best JPC Leader/Advanced Leader, Best JPC School Club (Primary School), Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and Best JPC District Council.

      A selection panel made up of representatives from the Police, HSBC and non-governmental organisations picked the winners from 539 nominated JPC members and 758 school clubs.

      Mr Ravishankar G. Sukhwani from Mong Kok District was selected as the Best JPC Member and Mr Lai Kin-wah from Yau Tsim District as the Best JPC Advanced Leader. Each received a commendation trophy and an $8,000 cash award.

      The St. Francis Xavierˇ¦s College of Mong Kok District and the Po Leung Kuk Chong Kai-ching Primary School of Sha Tin District won the Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and the Best JPC School Club (Primary School) awards respectively. The former received $13,000 and the latter $8,000 as the cash awards. The Best JPC District Council award went to Mong Kok JPC District Council, which was honoured with a $21,000 cash award.
