Prince of Wales Hospital announces a fatal case and a critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) today (March 12) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of Human Swine Influenza (HSI):

     A 81-year-old female patient with chronic renal failure, hypertension and diabetes attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PWH on February 24 due to influenza symptoms.  She was admitted for further treatment.  Test result was confirmed positive to HSI on February 26 and she was prescribed with Tamiflu.  Patient's condition later deteriorated and succumbed today.  The hospital would like to express its sincere condolences to his family.  The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

     On the other hand, a 53-year-old female patient with good past health attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PWH on March 10 due to cough, headache and diarrhoea.  She was admitted into the isolation ward and HSI was confirmed the same day.  Antibiotics and Tamiflu were prescribed.  The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and she was transferred to the intensive care unit.  She is now on ventilation support.  The hospital would continue to closely monitor her condition.
