Two red tide occurrences have been sighted in Yan Chau Tong waters over the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (February 26).
The sightings at Yan Chau Tong were reported by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) staff on February 22 and 24. The former dissipated while the latter still persists. No associated death of fish was reported in both occurrences.
"The red tide reported on February 22 was formed by Noctiluca scintillans which is common in Hong Kong waters. The one reported on February 24 was formed by Akashiwo sanguinea which is seldom found. Both species are non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.
The AFCD has urged mariculturists at Shau Tau Kok, Kat O, O Pui Tong and Sai Lau Kong Fish Culture Zones to monitor the situation closely.
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
