Hospital Authority announces two fatal cases of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority (HA) today (February 22) announced two fatal cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 77-year-old man suffering from end-stage lung cancer, heart disease and hypertension attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital on February 20 due to cough and fever. He was admitted into the isolation ward and prescribed with antibiotics. Patient's condition was further deteriorated and succumbed yesterday (February 21). Test result was positive to HSI. The hospital would like to express its sincere condolences to his family.

     Furthermore, a one-year-old boy with congenital heart disease developed flu symptoms on December 1, 2009 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Kwong Wah Hospital on December 3. He was admitted to Paediatric general ward and later admitted to Paediatric Intensive Care Unit on December 11. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on December 12. The boy was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics and was on ventilation support.

     The boy was transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment on his underlying diseases on February 8, 2010. His condition was further deteriorated and he finally succumbed on February 19. The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     The cases have been reported to the HA Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
