HAB instructs HK Kart Club to submit report

     The Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) has today (February 18) instructed the Hong Kong Kart Club to submit a report on the fatal incident at a kart track at Lung Kwu Tan, Tuen Mun yesterday and conduct a comprehensive review on the safety measures at the kart track.

    HAB and representatives from relevant government departments visited the kart track this morning to inspect the facilities and operation there. They also met the Hong Kong Kart Club which was responsible for monitoring the daily operation of the kart track so as to have a better understanding of the incident happened yesterday.

    ˇ§We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident and would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and relatives of the girl,ˇ¨ a spokesman for the HAB said.

     ˇ§The HKSAR Government is very concerned about the incident. According to our preliminary observation, the Hong Kong Kart Club has complied with the condition in the land lease to monitor the implementation of necessary safety measures by the operator of the kart track, and submitted periodic reports to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. We have instructed the Hong Kong Kart Club and the operator of the kart track to submit a report as soon as possible to help relevant departments understand the cause of the incident, as well as reviewing the safety measures at the kart track.ˇ¨

     The Hong Kong Kart Club is a member of the Federation Internationale de Lˇ¦automobile, the international sport association for karting, and has been authorised as the governing body for karting in Hong Kong. Kart competitions in Hong Kong have to be conducted in accordance with the safety regulations and guidelines issued by the Federation Internationale de Lˇ¦automobile to its affiliated members.

     The kart track concerned is now temporarily closed.

     Attending the inter-departmental meeting today included representatives from the Lands Department, Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Tuen Mun District Office and the Police.
