A fatal case of human swine influenza at Princess Margaret Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) today (February 17) announced a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 51-year-old male patient with history of diabetes mellitus and lung disease was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital via Accident & Emergency Department on December 30 last year because of flu symptoms. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on the same day and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated on January 4 and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He finally succumbed this morning (February 17). The hospital would like to express its condolences to the patient's family.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
