Fatal case of human swine influenza in United Christian Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     A spokesperson of United Christian Hospital (UCH) today (February 9) announced a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 73-year-old male patient with history of diabetes mellitus and multiple chronic diseases attended the Accident and Emergency Department of UCH on January 5 with flu-like symptoms. The patient was admitted to the medical ward and positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day. He was prescribed with Tamiflu, Relenza and antibiotics. His condition improved and he was transferred to Kowloon Hospital on January 23 for rehabilitation. The patient developed symptoms of stroke and was transferred back to the medical ward of UCH last Friday (February 5). He passed away on Saturday night (February 6). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
