************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Wan Chai District Council:

The public place under Canal Road Flyover will have a facelift as an improvement project with aluminium cladding installation works under the theme of "24 Solar Terms" was launched today (February 9).

The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, and the Wan Chai District Council (WCDC) Chairman, Mr Suen Kai-cheong, officiated this morning at the project's launch ceremony.  It is one of the environmental improvement projects of the WCDC District Works and Facilities Management Committee, with funding of $7.4 million from the District Minor Works Programme.

The project features aluminium cladding installations on 12 flyover columns, in addition to improvement works including demolition of the existing sitting-out area, repaving the pavement, installation of railing, bollards and curved feature wall.  Graphic representations of 24 solar terms, in the form of Chinese paper-cutting pattern, will be inscribed on the aluminium cladding of the flyover columns and illuminated by spotlights.  A stainless steel tablet will also be installed in a pertinent place under the flyover to briefly introduce the concept of "24 Solar Terms".

Mrs Tan said this project would help improve the environment and the pedestrian flow in the district.  She also thanked District Council members, district representatives and residents for their support to the project.

The improvement project will give the area a new look upon its completion by the end of this year.
