The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (February 8) pursued four claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for about $100,000 on behalf of 11 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
None of the defendants - Mega Projects Construction Limited, Lui Dat Fat and Chang Kuen Kin and Wong Tat Kong trading as Dr. Shirley K.K. Chang's Dental Clinic - appeared. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $47,460, $42,262.50 and $659.27, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The Adjudicator also ordered the defendant, Yeung Ka Lai trading as Yat Sing Travel Company to pay the MPFA $10,000 being a financial penalty imposed by the MPFA for failure to make MPF contributions for employees.
The amounts awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The tribunal further ordered the respective defendants to pay costs of $215, $238, $129 and $129.
