Secretary for Security urges public to join police to combat throwing of objects from height
************************************************************

The Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose S K Lee, today (February 6) called on the public to co-operate with the Police to combat the throwing of objects from a height.

Speaking at the Wan Chai District Fight Crime Carnival cum Winter Precaution Publicity Campaign, co-organised by Wan Chai District Fight Crime Committee and Police (Wan Chai District), Mr Lee said Police were highly concerned about incidents of corrosive fluid being thrown from a height.

To prevent people from entering buildings to commit crimes and to avoid  similar incidents, Mr Lee urged members of the public to take measures to strengthen building security. They should also remain vigilant, pay attention to any strangers, and contact the Police whenever suspicious figures were spotted.

He said, "The Police will also take heed of the advice of the District  Council and the Fight Crime Committee in rendering full support to the public in combatting this sort of crime."

He noted that last year, Wan Chai District recorded 4,324 criminal cases, a decrease of 206 cases or four percent compared with 2008. Cases of  burglary, serious wounding, and criminal damage have been decreasing, showing that public order in Wan Chai has improved.

Mr Lee said that as the Lunar New Year was approaching, the Police had launched the Winter Precaution Campaign since December 21, 2009. Patrols have been strengthened at high-risk locations like crime black spots, jewellery shops and banks.

Mr Lee called on members of the public to stay alert for home  security, and keep an eye on personal property in order to have a safe and happy Lunar New Year.
