SEN visits Kwai Tsing District (with photos)
********************************************

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, visited Kwai Tsing District today (February 4) to see the latest development of environmental protection facilities and to hear the views of local residents about improvements to the environment.

Mr Yau made his first stop at the restored landfill site at Gin Drinkers Bay in Kwai Chung, where he was updated on the use of the site after it was developed for recreational use.

Part of the restored Gin Drinkers Bay landfill site has been granted to the Hong Kong Cycling Association (HKCA) for the development of the Hong Kong Jockey Club International BMX Park. The BMX Park was opened in October last year and was used for the BMX event of the East Asian Games 2009 where Hong Kong's first gold medal was won.

Mr Yau was briefed by HKCA representatives on the venue and was given a demonstration of a BMX ride. He was then briefed by the Environmental Protection Department's personnel on restoration works at the site.

Next stop was Kwai Chung Plaza where Mr Yau visited a social enterprise, "Love Multi Culture". The enterprise helps South Asians by creating job opportunities and offering assistance. Mr Yau said he was very impressed by their efforts in building a harmonious and inclusive community.

Mr Yau then called on the HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre and learnt about the elderly services provided there. He was interested in the environment-friendly soap production class for women. He also met the people participating in the centre's activities and listened to their views on improving the environment.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Yau met Kwai Tsing District Council members at Kwai Hing Government Offices and sought their views on environmental protection and local affairs.
