School-leavers and job seekers are invited to explore education and career opportunities in Hong Kong's maritime industry by visiting the booth of the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council at the Education and Careers Expo 2010 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) between tomorrow and Sunday (February 4-7).
"Job opportunities in the maritime industry will remain plentiful in the foreseeable future, because the industry has been short of manpower in recent years," a spokesman for the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council said.
The exhibition at the booth describes the job nature and entry requirements for professional careers in various maritime service sectors in Hong Kong, including ship management, ship finance, ship broking, marine insurance, maritime law and maritime arbitration, as well as professional posts in the Marine Department.
"There are shore-based as well as sea-going jobs in the diverse maritime sector, but working experience in a maritime environment is often a prerequisite for embarking on a shore-based career," the spokesman said.
The booth also provides information on various maritime-related education programmes offered by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Vocational Training Council's Maritime Services Training Institute and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Training (Tsing Yi), as well as training incentive schemes like the Hong Kong Maritime Scholarship Scheme, Sea-going Training Incentive Scheme, and Ship Repair Training Incentive Scheme.
Visitors who wish to find out more should attend the "Gateway to Maritime Career" seminar, to be held from 5pm to 5.45pm on February 5 (Friday) at Seminar Room 1, Hall 1, HKCEC.
The speakers comprise Mr Tony Yeung, Manager, Maritime Services Training Institute of the Vocational Training Council; Dr Yip Tsz Leung, Assistant Professor, Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Mr Yeung Wing-cheung, Senior Lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Vocational Training Council; and Capt Marso Law, Convenor of the Maritime Professional Promotion Federation.
This opportunity to enquire directly about maritime careers and training programmes is open to all on a first come, first served basis.
The Education and Careers Expo 2010 is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at Hall 1, HKCEC, Harbour Road, Hong Kong, from February 4 to February 7. Admission is free.
