As part of the "On Your Marks, Get-Set, Go!" campaign in Sichuan, Invest Hong Kong today (January 28) organised an electronics-focused workshop in Chengdu. The workshop was presented in partnership with the Department of Foreign Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce of the Central People's Government, the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR and Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation.
"On Your Marks, Get-Set, Go!" was initiated in 2007 and aims to attract more privately-owned-enterprises (POEs) from the Mainland to set up or expand in Hong Kong. The three-year nationwide marketing campaign covers seven Mainland provinces; the Sichuan programme is the fifth of the series and was launched in September 2009. The second phase of the Sichuan programme featured the workshop, "Exploring International Opportunities in Hong Kong for Electronics Companies".
Addressing the ceremony, Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong, Miss Victoria Tang, highlighted Invest Hong Kong's aim to provide one-stop services for Mainland companies and its continued assistance to them after they have set up or expanded their business presence in Hong Kong. She said, "Hong Kong is the major centre for the Asian electronics industry. It offers a solid research and development base with advanced communications and transportation networks as well as rigorous intellectual property protection and excellent infrastructural facilities. Complementing the Mainland's 'going out' policy, Hong Kong is undoubtedly an ideal platform for Mainland enterprises to expand their businesses to the global market."
Miss Tang continued, "The electronics industry is Hong Kong's largest recipient of foreign investment and the largest export earner in Hong Kong's manufacturing sector. There are more than 9,000 overseas and local electronics companies operating in Hong Kong, including the top semiconductor houses and many leading international electronics companies. The operations of these companies cut across a wide spectrum of activities, covering regional headquarters, research and development, procurement, manufacturing, quality control, marketing and distribution. Moreover, major Asian electronics conferences and exhibitions are frequently held in Hong Kong, which enables enterprises from all over the world to have ready access to the latest market trends and product ideas."
To provide the audience with a better understanding of the investment environment of Hong Kong, Head of Technology at Invest Hong Kong, Mr Simon Tsang, spoke at the workshop about "The Business Environment of Hong Kong and the Advantages Enjoyed by Electronics Sector". In addition, representatives from Hong Kong's electronics sector were invited to speak on various topics, covering areas related to Applied Research & Development and International Cooperation for Electronics Sector in Hong Kong. Speakers included Manager, Marketing and Admission (IC/Electronics) of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Mr Eric Leung; Senior Manager, Communication Technologies of Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), Dr Liu Xin-yi; and the Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association, Mr Basil Wai.
Corporation from the electronics industry participants in the seminar had an active exchange of views with the speakers from the different departments and organisations at the seminar. Concluding the event today, Miss Tang said, "The internationalisation and dynamic service-oriented economy of Hong Kong will provide a suitable platform for the corporations of Sichuan to expand into the global market."
About the Invest Hong Kong "On Your Marks, Get-Set, Go!" campaign
The campaign covers seven Mainland provinces, namely Zhejiang, Shandong, Fujian, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guangdong and Liaoning. It also includes three distinct phases:
ĄD 'On Your Marks' covers promotional activities aimed at raising awareness of business opportunities in Hong Kong among Mainland China's growing class of POEs. This stage includes a carefully targeted nationwide advertising and editorial campaign, followed by large-scale seminars highlighting opportunities in Hong Kong. Invest Hong Kong Service Centres also distribute information on business opportunities to its networks of industry and government partners.
ĄD 'Get-Set' is a series of smaller, focused workshops in key locations, designed to equip local companies with the information and tools to develop an overseas business strategy, using Hong Kong as a stepping stone. The seminars focus on practical issues with speakers from the government and private sector offering guidance and tips on successfully growing a business on the international stage.
ĄD 'Go!' is the final stage of the three-year campaign with a series of business-focused visits to Hong Kong. These tailored programmes allow companies that are seriously considering setting up in Hong Kong to better understand the market, to meet relevant industry associations and to identify business partners, clients and premises.
