Judicial Appointments

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (January 26) announced two judicial appointments covering the High Court and the District Court.

     The appointments include one Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court and one District Judge. Both appointments are made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission.  They will take effect from February 1, 2010.

Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court

     Mr Mohan Tarachand Bharwaney, SC, is appointed as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court.

District Judge
--------------

     Ms Anthea Pang Po-kam is appointed as District Judge.

     Further judicial appointment will be announced in due course.

     The biographical notes of the appointees are as follows:

Mr Mohan Tarachand Bharwaney, SC

     Mr Bharwaney, SC was born in 1953 in Hong Kong.  He obtained LL.B.(Hons) from the University of Hong Kong in 1976.  He was called to the Bar in Hong Kong and in Australia in 1978 and 1991 respectively.  He was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2008.  He has since 1978 been in private practice.

Ms Anthea Pang Po-kam

     Ms Pang was born in Hong Kong in 1962.  She obtained Bachelor of Social Science from the University of Hong Kong in 1985.  She obtained  P.C.LL. and LL.M. from the University of Hong Kong in 1994 and 2001 respectively.  She was called to Bar in Hong Kong in 1994.  She joined the then Legal Department as Crown Counsel in 1995 and was promoted to Senior Government Counsel in 1998.  She was appointed as Deputy Principal Government Counsel in 2007.
