Regional Traffic Day on Hong Kong Island

     Police officers issued a total of 620 Fixed Penalty Tickets (FPTs) and 49 summonses to road users violating traffic regulations during a two-day operation of the Regional Traffic Day on Hong Kong Island.

     The operation concluded at 7 pm today (January 21) and a total of 212 officers from Traffic Hong Kong Island and District Traffic Teams of Eastern, Wan Chai, Central and Western were deployed to enforce traffic regulations at traffic black sites on Hong Kong Island.

     A total of 376 FPTs were issued for illegal parking and 244 for other traffic offences.

     Sixty-one pedestrians and 238 drivers were cautioned for committing minor traffic offences.

     Meanwhile, pamphlets and leaflets on road safety were also distributed to road users.

     Statistics revealed that a total of 2,890 traffic accidents involving casualties occurred on Hong Kong Island from January to December 2009.

     Among these traffic accidents, 54.3 per cent were attributed to the negligence of pedestrians.
