Cluster of Norovirus cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (January 18):

     Three male patients (aged 61-84) in the ventilator ward of QEH have presented with diarrhoea symptoms since January 16. The test results of all the patients concerned were positive for Norovirus.  Two of the patients are being treated under isolation, while the remaining one has ceased to have diarrhoea symptoms and no longer requires isolation.  The three patients are in stable condition.

     Admission to the affected cubicles of the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward are imposed. Infection control measures in the ward concerned have already been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close medical surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
