Hospital Authority announces two critical cases of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (January 14) announced two new critical cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 76-year-old male patient with Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease (COAD) attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital yesterday (January 13) for flu symptoms and was admitted for treatment.  Positive result for HSI was confirmed on the same day and the patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  His condition deteriorated subsequently and he was transferred to the High Dependency Unit for further treatment.  He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

     In addition, a 74-year-old male patient with a history of ischaemic heart disease, hypertension and an old cerebral vascular accident attended the Department of Accident and Emergency of Yan Chai Hospital yesterday for shortness of breath, chest pain and cough and was admitted for treatment.  His condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on the same day.  Positive result for HSI was confirmed today.  He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  The patient is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

     The hospitals are closely monitoring their condition.
