Cluster of Norovirus cases in a rehabilitation male ward of Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (January 12):

     Since January 9, a total of four patients (aged from 71 to 88) and a staff member of a rehabilitation male ward of TMH had presented with diarrhea symptoms.  Appropriate tests had been arranged for the patients.  Results for three patients were positive to Norovirus.  One of the confirmed patients (aged 88) succumbed on 10 January due to his underlying disease.  All the remaining patients are being treated under isolation and in stable condition, while the staff concerned is on sick leave.

     Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visiting to and discharge from the ward is imposed.  Infection control measures of the ward have already been stepped up.  All other patients in the ward are under close medical surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
