Hospital Authority announces two new critical cases of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (January 11) announced two new critical cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 45-year-old male patient with good past health developed flu symptoms on January 6 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital on January 9.  He was admitted to the intensive care unit.  Positive result for HSI was confirmed yesterday (January 10) and the patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

     In addition, a 52-year-old female patient with a history of diabetes mellitus was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital via the Accident & Emergency Department on January 9 because of flu symptoms.  The patient tested positive for human swine influenza on the same day and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  Her condition deteriorated yesterday.  She was transferred to the intensive care unit for further treatment and required ventilation support.  

     The hospitals are closely monitoring their conditions.
