HA announces a fatal case and a critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (January 10) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 85-year-old female patient with history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension attended the Accident and Emergency Department at North District Hospital on December 24, 2009 due to fever and acute dyspnoea. She was then transferred to the isolation ward for treatment. Positive result for HSI was confirmed the same day. She was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics and required ventilation support. She succumbed yesterday (January 9). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     On the other hand, a 41-year-old male patient with good past health history has developed fever and cough since January 1. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on January 8 and was then admitted to Intensive Care Unit for treatment. His test result for HSI was confirmed positive on January 9. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.
