Hospital Authority announces two critical cases of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority spokesperson today (January 8) announced two new critical cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 67-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure developed fever with cough on January 5 and was admitted to the medical ward of Tuen Mun Hospital through Accident & Emergency Department on January 7.  Positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day.  Since the condition of the patient has deteriorated, he was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.  He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.   The patient is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

     Another case is a 62-year-old female patient with chronic heart diseases who developed fever and shortness of breath on January 2.  She attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on January 6 and was admitted to the isolation ward and prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment on the same day.  Positive result of HSI was confirmed on January 7.  She is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

     The hospitals will continue to closely monitor the condition of the two patients.  All the cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
