HA announces a fatal case and a critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (January 6) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 85-year-old woman who had been bed-ridden and on tube feeding attended the Accident and Emergency Department at Pok Oi Hospital on December 22, 2009 due to fever and acute dyspnoea.  Positive result for HSI was confirmed the same day.  She was then transferred to the isolation ward of Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and she required ventilation support. She succumbed at around 3am today (January 6). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     A 69-year-old male patient with good past health attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital on January 4 due to shortness of breath. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and tested positive for human swine influenza on January 5. The patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is in critical condition and requires ventilatory support. The hospital is closely monitoring his condition.
