HA announces a fatal case and a critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (January 5) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 68-year-old man with TB Meningitis and pneumonia was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital via the Accident and Emergency Department on September 1, 2009 due to flu symptoms.  Positive result of HSI was confirmed on September 4, 2009 and the patient was prescribed with Tamiflu. He was transferred to Shatin Hospital on October 1, 2009 for rehabilitation.  He was subsequently transferred several times from Shatin Hospital to Prince of Wales Hospital due to his underlying chronic illness.  On January 1, 2010, the patient passed away in Shatin Hospital due to deterioration of his clinical condition.  The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     On the other hand, a 51-year-old male patient with history of diabetes mellitus and lung disease was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital via Accident & Emergency Department on December 30, 2009 because of flu symptoms. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on the same day (December 30, 2009) and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated on January 4, 2010 at night and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.  The hospital will closely monitor his condition.
