Guizhou Provincial Song and Dance Ensemble will showcase Miao, Dong, Yao and Yi ethnic dances next month to demonstrate its artistic excellence.
The ensemble will perform song and dance "Colourful Guizhou" and many award-winning works in the programme. These include Miao dance "The Wooden Drums of Fanpai", men's group dance "Basha, Transmigration and Hunters", Tong dance "Duoye" and Yao dance "Stamping to the Beat of Drums" (the pre-opening programme of the 2008 Beijing Olympics) that won major awards at the 3rd All China Variety Showcase of Ethnic Minority Groups in 2006; and "Flowers Bloom in the Balmy Spring Air" that won the bronze medal at the 4th Dance Contest held by China Central Television in 2007.
Guizhou Provincial Song and Dance Ensemble is a professional performing arts group established in 1956 with a diverse repertory of dance drama, opera, ethnic dance and music. The company has a cast and crew of more than 200, with many nationalities--Han, Miao, Bouyei, Dong, Yi, Hui, Manchu and Tujia. It has toured the UK, Canada, Hungary, Russia, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and India as a cultural delegation from the Mainland to promote Guizhou ethnic culture and for artistic exchange. Its performances have won critical acclaim and prizes, including three Gold Awards for Originality, Performance and Scenography at the 2nd All China Variety Showcase of Ethnic Minority Groups in 2001 for "Blooming Red", a large-scale work of ethnic song and dance, and three Wenhua Awards for New Repertoire, Choreographer-Director and Scenography presented by the Ministry of Culture of China in 2002.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Colourful Guizhou: A Showcase of Miao, Dong, Yao and Yi Ethnic Dance" will be at 8pm on February 5 (Friday) at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall; February 6 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre, and February 7 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Tai Po Civic Centre. Tickets priced from $80 to $160 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
