A fatal human swine influenza case at United Christian Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of United Christian Hospital (UCH) made the following announcement today (January 3) regarding a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 49-year-old male patient with history of complicated diabetes mellitus and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome attended the Accident and Emergency Department of UCH on December 22 with fever, flu-like symptoms. The patient was admitted to the isolation ward requiring ventilation support. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. The patient's condition became critical and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on December 23. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on December 24 and he finally succumbed at 6.07pm yesterday (January 2). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
