A man charged with running an unlicensed restaurant was fined $8,000 in Kowloon City Magistrates' Court this morning (December 29). The prosecution had been made following a raid last month (November) by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) on an unlicensed rooftop barbecue site in Soy Street, Mong Kok.
The court also ordered forfeiture of all the seized articles which included barbecue stoves and eating utensils.
Under the Food Business Regulation, the maximum penalty for operating an unlicensed restaurant is a fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.
"We will continue to take stringent enforcement action against unlicensed food businesses to safeguard food safety and public health," an FEHD spokesman said.
"People should report such illegal activities through the 1823 Call Centre."
