The spokesperson of Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) made the following announcement today (December 29) regarding a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI):
An 80-year-old man suffering from diabetes, heart disease and hypertension attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PWH on November 26 due to shortness of breath and cough. He was admitted to the medical ward. HSI was confirmed the next day (November 27) and he was transferred to the isolation ward. Tamiflu and antibiotics were prescribed. The patient condition later improved and was transferred to Shatin Hospital on December 18 for rehabilitation. On December 25 his condition deteriorated again and he was transferred back to PWH for treatment. His condition continued to deteriorate and he finally succumbed on December 27.
PWH has been in close communication with the patient's family regarding his condition. The hospital would like to express its deepest condolences to the family. The case has been reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.
