Renowned as the culinary capital of Asia, Hong Kong boasts more than 11,000 restaurants featuring cuisines from all over the world. Today's (December 23) opening of Din Tai Fung's second Hong Kong venue in Causeway Bay enriches the choice for local customers and tourists from around the world.
Established in Taiwan in 1958, Din Tai Fung offers traditional Taiwanese and Shanghainese food and is particularly renowned for its dumplings. The company currently operates restaurants in 16 cities across nine countries, making it one of Taiwan's most popular restaurant exports. In January 2008, the company opened its first restaurant in Hong Kong, located in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The new outlet manager, Mr Marco Tai, said, "Din Tai Fung employs over 250 staff in its two Hong Kong restaurants and aims to build up an experienced team in order to maintain the overall level, quality and efficiency of our services. In addition, we hope to promote a spirit of hospitality in Hong Kong's catering industry as we firmly believe that this will greatly enhance the overall competitiveness of Hong Kong.
"Hong Kong has a world of exquisite international dining options with many cultures and tastes represented in the city offering a gourmet's delight. Causeway Bay, with its appeal to both local residents and tourists alike, is the ideal location for our second and largest restaurant in Hong Kong. The recent signs of economic recovery provide a positive outlook for our continued investment in the city, as well as strengthening our confidence in Hong Kong's catering industry for the long term," he added.
Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong, Mr Simon Galpin, is pleased to see the business expansion of Din Tai Fung in the city. "I would like to congratulate and thank Din Tai Fung for its expanded investment in Hong Kong's catering sector. Enhancing the breadth of cuisines on offer and providing quality and efficient service are fundamental to reinforcing Hong Kong's reputation as the culinary capital of Asia. Invest Hong Kong looks forward to helping Din Tai Fung open more outlets here in the near future."
Mr Galpin continued, "The catering industry is a major services industry in Hong Kong, and it brings substantial economic benefits every year. The value of total receipts of the restaurants sector reached HK$59 billion in January-September 2009 contributing significantly to Hong Kong's economy and enhancing local employment opportunities."
