HA announces fatal case and critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (December 21) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 57-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and heart disease developed fever and cough on December 11. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on December 15 and was admitted to the isolation ward for further treatment. Positive result for HSI was confirmed on December 16 and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated on December 17 and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit and put on ventilation support. The patient succumbed at 12.35pm today (December 21). The hospital expresses its condolences to the patient's family. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
 
     A 30-year-old female patient with good past health attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital on December 19 due to fever and cough. She was admitted to the isolation ward and prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics on the same day. Positive result for HSI was confirmed on December 20. Her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit today (December 21). She is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor her condition.
