CS visits a secondary school (with photos/video)
************************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, today (December 18) visited the Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School to better understand the implementation of the New Senior Secondary (NSS) curriculum and see the students' artistic creations and performance.

Mr Tang, accompanied by the school principal Mr Chan Tsze-ying, observed a secondary four Visual Arts lesson.  Under the guidance of the teacher, the students carried out group activities to learn to appreciate and apply arts in daily lives.  Visual Arts is an elective subject under NSS curriculum, which trains students' abilities to create and appreciate works of art.

The students introduced Mr Tang to a number of their artistic creations, including different styles of paintings, crafts and sculptures.  He also watched a Guzheng performance by a student, Chan Tin-chi, who was a national gold medallist in the junior Guzheng competition of this year's Fourth China Youth Arts Festival.

Mr Tang appreciated the vibrant arts and culture atmosphere in the school.  He said, "I am glad that the school has provided an ideal environment to stimulate students' creativity.  I wish students can make best use of their creativity and generate positive energy."

Mr Tang said that exposure to arts and culture at childhood helps foster students' all-roundedness.  It is also conducive to the development of arts and culture and the creative industries in Hong Kong.  Noting that Stage One public engagement exercise of the West Kowloon Cultural District project would end on January 7, 2010, Mr Tang encouraged students and teachers to express their views.

Chatting with the students, Mr Tang encouraged them to grasp the opportunities under the NSS curriculum to experience different modes of learning and enrich their lives.  He also gave his best wishes to secondary five to seven students who are sitting for public examinations.
