SEN to attend Copenhagen Climate Conference

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, will next week attend as a member of the Chinese Delegation to the 15th session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (also known as the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009 or COP15) and attend the Climate Summit for Mayors as a member of C40 Large Cities Climate Leadership Group in Copenhagen, Denmark.

     He will leave Hong Kong on Saturday night (December 12) and attend the conference which is anticipated to be a milestone in combating climate change globally. He will share Hong Kong's experiences in formulating strategies and measures to tackle climate change with other participants and draw references from their experiences in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

     He will also take the opportunity to visit environmental facilities in Sweden and call on officials to discuss issues of common concern.

     On Sunday (December 13), Mr Yau will meet the Mayor of Malmo, Mr IImar Reepalu in Sweden during a lunch reception hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (London) (London HKETO).

     After a short tour in West Harbour in the afternoon, he will visit a waste incineration plant of Sysav South Scania Waste Company and a power plant, E.ON, to see their green initiatives.

     Later in the afternoon, he will visit the exhibition of "MyCar" at Bella Centre in Copenhangen.

     On Monday (December 14), Mr Yau will visit the Ports of Stockholm and meet the Chairman of the Tallberg Foundation which promotes sustainable development. He will then attend a lunch co-hosted by London HKETO and Royal Sweden Hong Kong Society to brief the Swedish business community on Hong Kong's latest developments.

     In the afternoon, he will join guided tours by officials of City of Stockholm's Environmental Administration to a low emission zone and goods logistic projects. He will also see the production of Biogas (a fuel for lower emissions), a Biogas fuelling station, and a new eco-city under planning.

     Afterwards, he will leave Stockholm for Copenhagen and attend the reception and dinner of the Climate Summit for Mayors hosted by US Conference of Mayors.

     On Tuesday morning (December 15), Mr Yau will speak at the opening press conference for the Copenhagen Climate Summit for Mayors and join the presentations on "Which path will cycling take in the future?"

     He will then attend the VIP lunch hosted by Climate Leaders Summit 2009 and speak at the Roundtable Discussion on "Low Carbon Transport -Mass Transit and Green Vehicles", followed by a reception co-hosted by London HKETO and Denmark-Hong Kong Trade Association.

     Later in the afternoon, he will attend the High Level Opening Ceremony of COP15 and "Seal the Deal in Copenhagen" Reception and dinner.

     On Wednesday (December 16), Mr Yau will attend the Joint High-level Segment of COP15.  In the evening, he will take part in the closing ceremony of the Climate Summit for Mayors.

     He will call on the Chinese Ambassador in Denmark, Mr Xie Hangsheng, and Hong Kong stakeholders in the morning of December 17.  He will then attend all the remaining sessions of the Joint High-level Segment of COP15 and take part in the closing session on December 18.

     He will leave Copenhagen for Hong Kong on December 19.
