Road safety campaign to promote safe cycling
********************************************

Police conducted a territory-wide safe cycling campaign to raise public awareness between November 23 and December 6, 2009.

The campaign was the latest in an ongoing series of road safety campaigns using a combination of publicity, education and enforcement. Cyclists, especially those engaged in fast food delivery, were reminded of the importance of road safety and their legal responsibilities.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited a total of 871 locations frequented by cyclists, including cycling tracks, railway stations, and fast food shops which were employing cyclists, and distributed 19, 134 publicity and education leaflets during the first phase of the campaign.

Enforcement action resulted in 369 verbal warnings and the issue of 530 summonses to cyclists who committed offences.

A police spokesman said that between January and November 2009 there had been 1, 649 accidents involving bicycles, 1, 710 people had been injured and 8 had been killed. Cyclists on the road should comply with the road traffic legislation; offenders committing blatant cycling offences will be prosecuted.
