Hospital Authority announces two critical cases of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     A Hospital Authority spokesperson today (December 4) announced two new critical cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

     A 45-year-old male patient with history of Diabetes Mellitus developed flu symptoms on November 28 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on Tuesday (December 1).  He was admitted to the isolation ward for further treatment.  Positive result of HSI was confirmed on Wednesday (December 2) and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  He became critically ill last night (December 3).

     The other patient is a 56-year-old female with good past health.  She had developed flu symptoms since November 29 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Kwong Wah Hospital yesterday (December 3).  She presented with respiratory failure and was admitted to the intensive care unit.  The test result for HSI was confirmed positive yesterday.  She was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  She is in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

     The two hospitals will continue to closely monitor the condition of the two patients.
